Rust Out or Wear Out?! Any Other Choices?

The morning of college graduation we had a baccalaureate speaker who's theme was "It will wear out before it rusts out."  His talk focused on living at a reasonable pace and taking regular time off.

That evening at the graduation ceremony the main speaker's theme was "It will rust out before it wears out."  No kidding.  He spent his time challenging us to work and work hard!

We get all kinds of messages and we're often torn by which messages to embrace; however, the bottom line is we don't desire either of the previously mentioned options!

We don't want to rust out.

We don't want to wear out.

Thankfully, it's not an either or choice.

Although, navigating this may be sticky, I believe it's similar to playing percussion.  It's not all about striking the drum it's more about the time in between the strikes.

If there's not even spacing between the beats then it's aimless noise.  But, when the space between the beats is even, then there's a desirable rhythm.

That's a lot like life.  Working hard and building healthy margin in life creates a desirable and livable rhythm.

That seems to be the key concept of "sabbath" in the Bible.  Jesus tells his followers that the concept is actually to benefit us.

We'd do well to pursue health and true productivity and embrace the idea of a day off.

What should we do on that day?  How should we recharge our batteries?  Here are three things to consider:

1.  Slow down and get quiet.

I once heard about a safari guide who told the people following him, "We're going to rest today so that our souls can catch up with our bodies."

2.  One of the ways we recharge our batteries is by doing the things we love.

3.  Spend time with people who energize you.  Family.  Friends.  Be intentional about it.

"He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed."  --Proverbs 11:25
