Which Jesus?

Recently, I was reflecting on the various depictions of Jesus that I've seen throughout my life.  Think about it.  It can be pretty bizarre!

Let me elaborate.

I've seen a picture of Jesus where He has what appears to be a heart in His hand and there's radiant light shining from His chest.  I recently heard Allen Hirsch refer to that picture as "Spooky Jesus."  I mean He's not very human.  It appears that if you cut Him He would bleed light . . . not blood!

Then there's this swedish blonde Jesus that I've seen in movies.  He's very good looking.  Blue eyes and his blonde hair is blowing in the wind as He looks out over the Sea of Galillee.  He certainly doesn't seem like a Jewish rabbi and I get the feeling that someone could rework the scene and make a bad to average shampoo comercial out of it.

Then, there's a scene from this old silent film that I saw once.  A little Jewish girl approaches Jesus and brings Him her wooden doll.  The doll has a broken leg.  Upon closer examination you notice that it's a roman soldier doll.  Given the relationship between the Jewish people and their Roman oppressors, it's seems a little unlikely that she'd be playing with a roman soldier doll in the first place.  If she was, she'd probably have the doll for the purpose of breaking it's leg.  Anyway, in this movie, Jesus heals the broken doll's leg and hands it back to the girl.  Very sweet, but when I watched it closely, I got the feeling that Jesus might have been played by Mr. Rogers.

It seems to me that we've got all these images and ideas about Jesus that are floating out there and they keep coming!  A couple of years ago we saw the addition of the "Jesus is my homeboy" t-shirts and bobble head Jesus.  I've even seen one where Jesus is smiling and giving two thumbs up.  Someone suggested this depiction should be called "Buddy Jesus."

In all of this . . . where is the biblical Jesus?

Several years ago Eminem asked the question, "Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?"  People must be feeling that about Jesus.  "Will the real Jesus please stand up?"

But, if we're asking that, it's not because He hasn't taken a stand.  Most likely it's because we look everywhere except the Bible to find out about Him.

I'd like to encourage you to look into the Bible and seek Jesus.
